Being a huge Johnny Winter fan for 25 years or more I have enjoyed but have been disappointed with his last two albums. This album however is no disappointment. Although it lacks his fiery guitar runs of 20 years ago his great vocal growl is back and he sounds like he is having a great time. His guitar playing is still very good and really has that blues feel to it. Although these songs have been done so many times by other artists, Johnny puts his brand on these and make them his own. The guests appearing on this album are of high musical calibre. Johnny let's his guests express themselves throughout and the result is excellent. If you are a Johnny fan, this is a must have. 37 of 38 people found the following review helpful Johnny Winter - Roots, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Roots (Audio CD) It was a truly pleasant surprise to get this disc today. It is refreshing to hear Johnny playing and singing like he's having a great time, and that comes across on each and ever song. For too long I have been disappointed with JW's output and especially his live shows. I was starting to get that sinking feeling that he was through. The songs have been done before so many times, but this disc actually makes them sound fresh. There are so many great players on this disc. Johnny sounds in great voice and playing. It's stinks that there are no liner notes because this CD should have had them. I think Johnny will ge up for an award in 2012. Lets hope so. 20 of 21 people found the following review helpful Great Release - Johnny's voice has never sounded better ( guitar playing , too ) !!!, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Roots (Audio CD) A wonderful surprise - Johnny Winter & guests have created an album of classics , with heart & soul. I've never heard Johnny sing better ! It's nice to hear an album with guest artists that haven't been homogenized by T-Bone Burnett ! Thank God he's nowhere to be found !! What you get is a a fun, soulful production by Paul Nelson, one of Johnny's longtime cohorts in the Blues . He brings out the best in everyone !!! Buy this cd, you'll be tapping your feet, and singing in no time . |
